Textbook Smarts

Textbook Smarts

Help Students Save Money on Textbooks

Consider this before adopting a textbook:

      •  Is there open material available for the course?

      •  Do students really need a textbook for the course?

      •  Can I create an my own course content using freely available material?

Older editions

        •  Allow students to use older editions of their textbooks

        •  Contact the library to compare old and new editions of textbooks

When choosing course content, consider:

        •  The cost of the textbook

        •  Open textbooks available through provincial consortiums like BC Campus

        •  A collection of freely available material from the library and the internet

Inform students:

        •  about older editions

        •  how often the textbook will be used in the class

        •  if the library has a copy of the textbook available

Open Education Resources (OERs)

  • Look for an OER related to your course
  • Develop your own OER
  • Contact the library for assistance with creating an OER for your course
