Before you buy textbooks

Ask your Instructor:

        •  If they have considered using open material that is free to students

        •  If it is necessary to use the latest edition

        •  How often the textbook will be used throughout the term

        •  If they have alternative materials like course packs, slides or modules

        •  If it is necessary to have an access code for a textbook

Borrow from the library 

        •  Check if the library has a copy of a textbook

        •  Textbooks are available for two hours loan 

        •  Buy or borrow older editions 

Ask about older editions

        •  Check with your instructor if you can use an older edition of a textbook

        •  Get help from the library to compare different editions 

        •  Borrow older editions from the library

Try an eBook

        • Some textbooks are available as eBooks

        •  Type your course code or the ebook title in the catalogue search box on the library website

Rent a textbook from the bookstore

        •  Bow Valley College bookstore rents textbooks for the whole term

        •  Contact the bookstore for more details

Buy used books from the bookstore

        •  You can sell and buy old textbooks from the bookstore

Buy used books from second hand market places

         •  Kijiji

         •  Facebook Marketplace

         •  Better World Books

         •  Check the display board on the second floor of the North and South campus for book sale ads

         •  Buy used textbooks from your classmate

Share with your friend 

         •  Book sharing with a friend is a good way to split a costs

         •  Set terms and conditions about using a book on a shared basis

         •  Studying together if possible
