Graphic novels are book-length comic narratives.

This literary form developed in the 1980s with works such as Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986), Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Parts I and II (1987/92) and Watchmen (1987) by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Graphic novels are distinguished from comic strips by their stylistic complexity, serious subject matter, and psychological depth that appeal to adults as well as younger readers.
